The Young Black and Purposeful Feature Series will feature the profiles of people
who exemplify what it means to be young, black, and purposeful in order to
inspire and motivate others. If you know of anyone who fits that description,
please nominate them to be featured! Check out Kasi’s interview:
Kasi is
originally from North Carolina, but she has been living in DC for nine years.
Her blog is called The Style Perk and is focused
primarily on fashion/personal style, as well as faith, fitness, beauty
(especially natural hair care), and travel. Kasi loves using social media for
daily inspiration and enjoys connecting with others through her blog.
Q: How would you describe your
purpose?
A: I'm actually still praying
on my exact purpose. Part of it is sharing my personal style and take
on fashion with the world through my blog while displaying my faith and
sharing how great God is at any opportunity that I get. In doing that, I'm also
showing black girl magic/black excellence.
Q: What would you say is the
difference between a career and a purpose? Is there a difference?
A: I think your purpose can be your
career, but most people have a career and purpose that are separate. A
career could be something that strictly pays the bills, while your purpose
is what God has put you on the earth to do, and is what you're passionate
about.
Q: How do you manage to
work full-time while also pursuing other passions?
A: I can say it's definitely hard,
but I'm relentless in my pursuit of my passion for blogging, so I work on
it at any moment that I can outside of my 9-5. It's a top priority for me.
Q: What struggles have you overcome
in pursuit of your purpose?
A: Time management and balancing my
blog, work, church responsibilities, and other family/friend
responsibilities are ongoing struggles, but it's really all about making
everything work.
Q: What advice would you give to
someone who is trying to figure out what their purpose is?
A: I would say really pray about it
and really ask God what His purpose for you is, and He will reveal it. You may
also already have your talent/passion, and just need to pray about how God
wants you to use it for His glory.
Q: What advice would you give to
someone who is afraid to fully pursue their purpose?
A: Again I would say pray
on it, and fully trust in God that He'll bless you with whatever you need
to pursue your purpose. Reflect and meditate on Romans 8:28 ("And
we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those
who love God and are called according to His purpose for them"), and
Jeremiah 29:11 ("For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord.
“They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.").
In addition to that, talking about your purpose/passion with your friends and
family can be helpful, because most will be very encouraging and
supportive.
I
